The Makerbot 5th Gen should be the easiest printer to find in stores. Despite a great deal of complaining regarding the new extruder I’ve had this model for over a year and it is my go-to printer. The Makerbot sets the standard for ease-of-use in 3D printing and is generally one of the best systems I’ve used.
This odd printer might be available in stores this weekend and is worth a look. It is currently priced at about $600 and includes a built-in 3D scanner along with a standard 3D printer. While it’s far from perfect and the software is rough it is definitely a fun – and cheap – little printer.
The cute little Afinia H-Series costs $1,299 but is a solid piece of work. Made of metal and plastic, this bare-bones unit can print high quality items using ABS plastic.
The Ultimaker 2 has been taking home the prize for base printer for most of this year and it deserves it. Priced at $2,499 this thing is a bit more expensive than I’d like but it’s a solid machine with a great interface and well worth the investment.
The Solidoodle Press 2.0 is a bulbous entry-level printer at a price anyone could love. I’ve tested it and came away very impressed. At only $399 you get an enclosed, solid printer with nice software and a great interface. The bad news? It will take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive so you will probably miss Christmas… but there’s always Valentine’s Day?
